Costa Rica Hacienda La Amistad SHB EP Organic Light Roast

“La Amistad” means “friendship” in Spanish and translates to the longstanding relationship between the land and owners in the Hacienda La Amistad reserve in Southwest Costa Rica.  Hacienda La Amistad is situated near the Panamanian border in Las Mellizas Costa Rica, and serves primarily as a natural reserve, encompassing just under 24,000 acres of pristine rainforest. Only 5% of the reserve is used for cultivating organic coffee, and the remaining 95% is set aside as a reserve recognized by the United Nations and UNESCO as a biological corridor.

Since 1940, Hacienda La Amistad has operated as an organic, shade-grown coffee estate within the rainforest reserve of Hacienda La Amistad.  This coffee and fruit farming project is among the oldest and largest continually certified organic farming projects in the Americas since its establishment in 1937.  Roberto Montero, the owner of La Amistad’s lodge and reserve has been honored by the Smithsonian for his conservation efforts. Over the past 12 years, Montero has integrated changes in coffee and fruit production to achieve a zero-carbon footprint.

Regarding the coffee grown at Hacienda La Amistad, SHB Coffee refers to the Strictly Hard Bean coffee grown at 1350 meters (4500 ft+), and EP stand for the European Process designed to produce a clean cup of coffee.

Shade grown coffee is known for its superior taste and symbiotic relationship with its surrounding environment. Banana plants are utilized at Hacienda La Amistad to shade the coffee plans and provide a second crop to benefit the preserve.
